The Art of Storytelling: Gameplay

Saints & Martyrs is a game about narrative creativity. Victory is not about defeating an opponent, but about weaving a compelling story of faith, virtue, and legacy in the face of adversity.

Game Objective

The goal is to earn "Legacy Points" by successfully overcoming dramatic Challenge cards. These points are a measure of your storytelling skill and your ability to creatively apply your Saints' strengths to the problems they face. The player with the most Legacy Points at the end of the game builds the most enduring legacy.

Deck Building & Setup

Each player begins with a pre-built 10-card deck containing 8 Saint cards and 2 Challenge cards. For a more advanced experience, players can mix and match Saints from different decks to create a custom team of historical figures whose virtues and skills complement one another.

On Your Turn

A turn is simple yet filled with creative choices:

  1. Draw a Challenge: Draw the top card from your Challenge deck. This will present a historical or allegorical crisis that needs a virtuous response.
  2. Assemble Your Saints: From your hand of Saint cards, choose one or more Saints you believe are best suited to tackle the Challenge.
  3. Tell Your Story: This is the core of the game. You must narrate how your chosen Saint(s) use their unique talents, personalities, and stats (Resolve, Spirit, Influence, Knowledge) to overcome the Challenge. There is no single correct solution—the more creative and thematically fitting your story, the better.
  4. Resolve the Challenge: Based on the strength of your story and how well your Saints' stats and domains align with the Challenge's requirements, you and the other players will determine if you succeed. Successful resolutions earn you Legacy Points.

With countless combinations of Saints and Challenges, no two games are ever the same, ensuring endless replayability.
